Intern Requirements

The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is the agency that provides administrative support to all Australia’s national health boards, including the Pharmacy Board of Australia (PBA).   AHPRA manages the PBA’s registration processes and has offices in each State and Territory.

  • Provisional Registration

All intern pharmacists must hold provisional registration.  Forms and further information on provisional registration are available for download at the AHPRA website - www.ahpra.gov.au

  • Approval of Supervised practice placement Supervisor

Pharmacy Interns must complete 1824 hours of supervised practice in accordance with the requirements set out in the Board’s Supervised practice arrangements registration standard.  You must seek approval of your proposed supervised practice placement.  Forms and further information are available for download at the AHPRA website - www.ahpra.gov.au

  • Preparation of extemporaneous products

Intern pharmacists are required to prepare 6 extemporaneous products during the course of the pre-registration year, under the supervision of their preceptor . Interns should consult the Extemporaneous dispensing procedures form (32.0 KB,PDF) before completing the Extemporaneous dispensing product report (33.0 KB,PDF).

  • First Aid Certificate

Intern pharmacists are required to hold a current First Aid Certificate (Level 2) (HLTFA301B Apply First Aid).  Evidence of this must be submitted to the ITP Coordinator.

  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Intern pharmacists are required to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in addition to the ITP program.
The requirement for participation in a specified number of CPD credits is being introduced in phases over a period of years. The PBA will assess compliance with the requirement at the annual renewal of registration.  Further information is available for download at the AHPRA website - www.ahpra.gov.au.

  • Professional Indemnity Insurance

A requirement of Provisional Registration is that pharmacy interns must hold adequate professional indemnity insurance.  Pharmaceutical Defense Ltd (PDL) has arranged with its underwriters, Guild Insurance to provide this cover free of charge to pharmacy interns in Australia.
